UK TOURISM is on the rise with the number of visits by overseas residents up by 12 per cent in the first half of this year, new figures show.
Foreign residents made 6.13 million visits to the UK in the first three months of 2005, the National Statistics Office revealed today.
While the number of American visitors dropped by eight per cent, Western Europeans made 14 per cent more trips to the UK than in January-March 2004.
The foreign visitors spent £2.51 billion on their trips to the UK in the first three months of this year, an 11 per cent rise on the January-March 2004 total.
UK residents made 12.4 million visits abroad in the first three months of this year, 5 per cent up than in the same period last year. They spent £6.13 billion on these January-March 2005 trips, 6 per cent more than in the first three months of last year.

A project to provide better information on tourist movements within New Zealand is under way, Tourism Minister Mark Burton announced today
The Ministry of Tourism's New Zealand Tourism Flows Model, will map where and how international and domestic tourists move throughout New Zealand.

India on Thursday announced plans to send a boatload of tourists to view an active volcano as an eruption in the Andaman archipelago gained in intensity.
The tourists will view the volcano on remote Barren Island which is spitting lava, ash and boulders up to a height of 330 feet.
