China’s capital Beijing witnessed the first tourism peak Tuesday in the golden week following the May Day holiday, as soaring numbers of tourists visited sites throughout the city, according to the Beijing Leading Group for Holiday Tourism.
The tourism department said the city’s 20 major tourism sites received 594,500 visitors Tuesday, up 29.24 percent from the same period last year.
The Forbidden City and Longqing Gorge, two famous sight spots in the city, received 84,900 tourists and 15,000 tourists respectively, both above the maximum handling capacity for the spots. The figures were up 43.7 and 76 percent respectively over last year.
Hotels in the city also enjoyed high check-in rates of 70 percent and above Tuesday.

NANJING, May 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The provincial tourism administration of Jiangsu province in east China announced that the country's main celebration activities for the 26th World Tourism Day will be staged in Lianyungang this September.
World tourism day September 27 every year. The theme this year focuses on "sports and tourism -- a force promoting mutual understanding as well as cultural and social development."
Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Qufu and other tourism resort cities have previously been chosen as the venues for hosting celebration activities before the tourism day, the tourism administration said.
India plans to hold tourism road shows in major Chinese cities this year to woo more tourists to Western and Southern parts of the country, official sources said here.
"We are planning to hold a comprehensive tourism road show in China in by October-end to attract more Chinese tourists to India," Regional Director (East Asia), Indiatourism, G Venkataraman said.
The road shows would be held in cities like Beijing, Dalian, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu and Indiatourism will be cooperating with Air India to woo more Chinese tourists to newer Indian destinations in Southern and Western India, which would also help reduce pressure
