SOARING temperatures could lead to Bank Holiday chaos on the roads and railways over the weekend.
Weather forecasters are predicting the warmest weather of the year so far over the weekend and, according to the AA, motorists can expect to experience one of the top five busiest weekends of the year.
An AA spokesman told the News: “We are likely to see the key motorways and A-roads busier than normal on Sunday and there may be localised traffic congestion, particularly on roads leading to the coasts, national parks and other countryside spots.”
Archie Robertson, chief executive of the Highways Agency, has issued his own words of advice.
He said: “Many of us travel during the May Bank Holiday, and planning your trip to allow enough time is important for safety and comfort.
“Safety must be everyone’s highest concern so I would encourage road users to drive safely and take regular breaks.”
Mr Robertson said the usual black spots, including the notorious A14, may pose problems. However, to keep delays to a minimum, the Highways Agency has reduced the amount of roadworks as much as possible and suspended some repair work.
