Has romance been reduced to acronyms?

If Shakespeare had not died of a fever, the knowledge that lovers everywhere would someday be listing their age, sex and location on Internet sites to find love wouldst have vanquished him.

When the Internet dating phenomenon reared its innovative head in the mid-1990s, I thought for sure it would be a fad among a niche group of techie singles. But by 2004, the Pew Internet and American Life Survey reported that a quarter of the American population had visited one of the 800 online dating sites or chat rooms that year.

Being a hopeless romantic, I refuse to seek out cyberspace romance. I am determined to face dating in the flesh instead of summing up my existence in a text box and then consulting a list of potential Mr. Rights spit out by a database. I want to tell my kids that love is about awkward first kisses, long walks in the park and losing your train of thought when you look into your loved one’s eyes. Besides, with my luck, I would probably spend three weeks chatting with a 40-year-old overweight trucker who claimed to be a 26-year-old personal trainer. Touching play revisits squelched teen romance

To describe certain situations, one can as easily reach for the word "cliche" as the word "truth." Were it not for playwright Craig Wright's gift for sure-footed, emotionally valid dialogue, that's the choice one would face with his play "The Pavilion," now at the Rattlestick Theater in New York City.
