Fun and romance in ‘Coronado’

Filed under:

A pampered wife (Kristin Dattilo) decides to surprise her fiance (Michael Lowry) by following him to Switzerland, only to discover that he’s really involved in political intrigue in an unstable Latin American country called ‘’Coronado'’ (Hallmark Channel at 9). Defying all logic, she follows his trail to that country’s far-off humid jungles and revolutionary climate. There, she finds a guide of sorts in the person of a brave, handsome American reporter (Clayton Rohner). Think she’ll find her future husband? Or stay engaged to him once she does? I’ll never tell. A tongue-in-cheek comedy-adventure clearly inspired by the ‘’Romancing the Stone'’ movies, ‘’Coronado'’ is more about going along for the bumpy ride than thinking too much about the story or thinly drawn characters.

Romance resonated in Vandross’ silky sound

In an era when R&B was often ruled by raunchy purveyors of thug love, Luther Vandross was a true romantic who tried a little tenderness. He sang of lasting relationships and special nights in which half the fun was in the wooing. The singer, who died Friday at age 54, didn't hide his emotions but exulted in them, and he never shied from exposing his vulnerabilities. He was the most celebrated balladeer of his generation.
