Sow There!: Trip north nets romance, garden gems

Filed under:

Last weekend Tommy and I visited my mother in Redding. Mom gave us a gift certificate for the Redding Bed and Breakfast, a delightful farmhouse run by Lacy LaMoire.

We had visions of going out dancing or dining somewhere quaint, but after a day at Burney Falls we were tired and ready just to sit in the hot tub and sip wine.

Lacy toured us through the house, which only had one other room rented out. She has a nice collection of antiques and has made headboards out of old fireplace hearths.

I’d never stayed at a B&B before, so I was expecting it to be kind of stuffy, like visiting British relatives. But Lacy was fairly quirky and had a lot of fun touches for “young people” like us.

She told us we could pick any room we wanted upstairs; however, “this is the room Tommy chose for you,” she said, leading us to the room where candles were burning and a dozen roses were in a vase on the bureau.

Extra flights predicted to boost tourism numbers

The increase in the number of flights to Ireland could boost tourism to eight million overseas visitors this year, it was claimed today. Tourism Ireland is optimistic that the 40% increase in air access capacity from continental Europe will help the island achieve its growth target of 5% for 2005. There will be 31,000 more seats available than last summer, largely as a result of new services provided by Ryanair, Easyjet and Aer Lingus, the tourism agency said. The majority of the increases will be on flights to Dublin, but Belfast, Cork and Shannon will see the biggest proportional rise in the number
