Hawaii’s hotels were the fullest – and the most profitable – in the nation during the first quarter, with more than 84 percent of the rooms occupied.

Hawaii hotels earned an average of $138 per room a night during the quarter, leading all U.S. cities, according to a report released yesterday by Hospitality Advisors LLC.

Spring-break travelers and conventioneers boosted travel to Hawaii in March. Occupancy and average room rates rose on all islands, but luxury and upscale properties led the pack and helped push overall statewide occupancy to a 5.1 percentage point gain, according to Hospitality Advisors.

Last Passover some 30,000 Israelis visited the Sinai. Most of the vacationers this year are Israeli Arabs and young people who have booked the cheap hotels. Some Sinai deals seem to be quite inexpensive, such as $35 a night in a three star hotel

Declining yen has tourism industry worried

At the beginning of the 1990s Japan's currency, the yen, was so strong that it caused an intense controversy in Australia. Fifteen years on, it is Australia's dollar that is so strong that the Australian tourism industry is now worried that Japanese people will not travel here any more. Many Japanese are cutting costs where they can, apparently booking fewer holidays to Australia. Even the most popular destinations such as far north Queensland may be lucky to beat last
