A monumental love story

She was a comet in orbit until her art career crashed when she was in her 30s.

He was a late bloomer, who didn’t peak as a sculptor until he reached middle age.

Regardless, the passionate love affair of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Camille Claudel (1864-1943) produced the extraordinary sculpture that inspired what is expected to be this season’s blockbuster exhibition, opening Oct. 9 at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

The two artists met in Paris in 1882 when Claudel was 17 and Rodin was 41. Recognizing her potential as a sculptor, he took her on as a student and later made her a studio assistant. He was obsessed by her beauty and talent, but he refused to give up other women to marry her.

Their story unfolds in “Camille Claudel & Rodin: Fateful Encounter.” It’s the first time the works of these two artists have been shown side by side in the United States to reveal their mutual influence during the late 19th century in Paris. Detroit is the only U.S. stop on a three-city tour that began in Quebec and will end in Martigny, Switzerland, next June.
