Green Bay East-West football game thrives amid rivalry, romance

Filed under:

OK, so the East-West rivalry isn’t as deadly as the feuding Montagues and Capulets. But romance has been known to happen.

While Mary and Tucker Hanson are far from star-crossed lovers, they were once cross-town rivals. And still are.

Mary is from Green Bay East High School’s Class of 1983, and Tucker is from West’s Class of 1984.

“He reminds me of it constantly and we do have tickets to the game. But what side do we sit on?” Mary Hanson said. “Maybe the middle of the road.”

Tucker Hanson played on West’s football team and was on the last team to play at Lambeau Field back in 1982.

The Hansons maintain a habit of good-natured ribbing about the rivalry.

They now make their home on neutral turf in De Pere.

“But it’s on the east side,” Mary Hanson said.

Green Bay East and Green Bay West began competing in football in 1905. The rivalry has not been interrupted since 1907. East leads 49-47-3 through 2004.

Other players from over the years vividly recall the East-West rivalry as good fun and a highlight of the year. Attendance often surpassed that of most Green Bay Packers games, which also were played at City Stadium at East High. The Packers played 136 games in 32 years there, winning six championships in the early days of the NFL.

“The East-West game outdrew the Packers. Only the Packer-Bear game was better attended,” said Don Poh, West Class of 1943, who played guard on offense and tackle on defense.

“Part of my job was to keep Bob Bush in his own backfield,” said Poh, who retired last year after running a music shop for 50 years.

Marvellous day for romance

TO HELL with neutrality and objectivity, I'm barracking this afternoon. Barracking for the story, and the story is the Swans. Yeah, yeah, I know, people true to their role in the media should be neutral and objective, and I like to think most of us are most of the time. Occasionally, though, the romance of a particular story is irresistible. It dwarfs everything else, as romance can do. Like 1990, when, for the first and perhaps only time in my life, I adopted Collingwood in the Grand Final. Watching the outpouring of emotion on the ground immediately after the final siren when the Magpies

Octoberfest where the romance began for one Appleton couple

Every time Brian and Lisa Buxton take in the sights, sounds and tastes of Octoberfest they can’t help but remember their first official date 16 years ago on College Avenue. Brian was working at the First United Methodist Church’s Octoberfest stand, selling pizza, and invited Lisa to meet him downtown after his shift. “We spent the whole day together and we’ve been together ever since,” said Brian. “We walked the avenue, listened to bands and then we agreed to see each other again,” recalled Lisa. Married 14 years, the Appleton couple returns every year, she said, “Unless it’s raining.” Retiree faces crowds Retiree John Stolla
