Japan’s chief cabinet secretary said Monday his country plans to hold talks next month with China to repair bilateral relations.Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said Monday the leaders of both nations remain committed to resolving issues and disagreements, Kyodo News reported.
Hosoda told a news conference the talks are expected to begin after Japan’s Golden Week holidays end May 8. He said they might be held at the foreign ministerial level, as well as the senior working level.
“Both countries will have to present ideas on how to sort out problems in order to resolve them one by one,” Hosoda said.
He said issues to be discussed include disputes over China’s natural gas development in the East China Sea, territorial claims on a chain of islets in the sea, and the countries’ different interpretations of historical events during World War II.
“I think we can make headway on various matters after the holidays,” Hosoda said.
China has been host to several anti-Japan protests in recent weeks that occasionally resulted in violence and damage to Japanese diplomatic and commercial concerns.
