The Lovemakers, “Times of Romance”
The Lovemakers (music) claim Prince as an early inspiration for their sexed-up sound. But the Purple One is noticeably absent from the steely cool mix of styles found on the trio’s major-label debut, “Times of Romance.”
The Oakland-based group definitely makes bedroom music, but it’s far closer in feel to Berlin than Barry White. That, however, doesn’t make it any less sexy.
The Lovemakers do an excellent job of re-creating the decadent feel of ’80s New Wave on “Times of Romance.” The album feels so authentic to the period that each copy should come bundled with some dark eyeliner, suitable for both boys and girls, and a pack of cloves.
So, the question that needs answering is, are you in the mood to peg your pants and take a swig off a wine cooler?
If you answer in the affirmative, it’s definitely recommended that you dive right into the swirling, electronic-rock dance music found on this accomplished work. The band–which features vocalist/guitarist Scott Blonde, vocalist/violinist Lisa Light and keyboardist Jason Proctor–bleeds Flock of Seagulls cool as it runs through such raves as “Dance” and “We Should be Taking Our Clothes Off.”
The album’s first single, “Prepare for the Fight,” has been in constant rotation for months on Bay Area modern-rock radio station Live 105. All hometown bias aside (go A’s!), it’s easy to understand why. The song, which comes across as a mix of The Cure and Erasure, is a true anthem that should propel this band into the bright lights. They’d better have their Ray Bans ready.
