Northern Ireland tourists top for holiday romance

Filed under:

Tourists from Northern Ireland and the east of England are the most likely to have a holiday romance, a new survey claimed today.

The UK-wide survey by Teletext Holidays also revealed the Welsh were the most successful at turning a holiday romp into a romance.

Nearly half (49%) of all holiday flings lasted less than a week and almost a fifth lasted just one night.

A women`s top holiday fling was with a sports instructor, while men prefer local waitresses or air stewardesses.

Australia was the best place to find sexy locals and Portugal the worst, the poll of 1,529 UK adults found.

The survey also found:

:: Holidaying Britons believe Italy is the best place to hear the language of love, while Greece is the worst.

:: The Italian accent was voted the sexiest and the Greek lingo the least attractive.

:: 27% said that the attractiveness of the locals influenced their choice of holiday destination.

:: Italians not only had the best accents but their country was considered the most romantic.

:: 15% of over-55s would be keen to join the mile-high club, but only 8% of 16-24-year-olds.

Teletext Holidays managing director Nishma Patel said: “Holidays should be special and if a fling comes into that, then so much the better.

“Our research shows that people are choosing holidays based on more than just good weather, stunning beaches and excellent food and wine, but they`re going for the quality of the local sights instead.”

The top romantic destinations were:

1. Italy (39%)
2. Caribbean (21%)
3. France (10%)
4. Spain (8%)
5. Australia (6%)
6. Greece (5%)
7. USA (5%)
8. Thailand (4%)
9. Portugal (1%)

Cradle of China Communism eyes ’Red Tourism’ riches

Coarse grain and a night in a cave don't feature in most holiday brochures, but the remote town of Yan'an hopes to earn a fortune from "red tourists" eager to relive the tough experiences of China's Communist pioneers. Yan'an was a dusty but secure home to Mao Zedong from 1935 to 1947 and where he coined the motto "serve the people" and welded his party into a fighting force capable of winning the civil war. But since the troops left, its main industry has been reliving the past. And with 2005 declared the year of Red Tourism -- travels to sites where
