I won two tickets to anywhere in Australia back in the old Ansett days some 11 years ago. Decided to take a friend in need to visit Kakadu & catch some Barramundi.
We hired a car & did the triangle Katherine through to Jabiru. We were only a couple of days from the finish of our trip & staying at the Croc Hotel. I set the task to my girlfriend to find two good looking local blocks with a boat so I could catch my Barra. It was State of Origin so pretty well all the guys were two sheets to the wind. She met Shoal who was good looking but not my cup of tea, long hair & earring. He was most enthusiastic to take the girls out on the bosses boat. Well in walked the boss, my first thoughts were “Beautiful Blue Eyes” & when he walked past me I thought “Great Tush”. He introduced himself as Hergy my first words to him were what sort of a bloody name is that?
Being a good Sydney girl I asked my girlfriend to back ground him & found out he had a girlfriend in Melbourne . So that was the end of it for me…never play in another persons back yard. So we proceeded to play pool & we whooped the boys. Next day we met them at 4 o’clock to go fishing. Had the chook & the champagne & I have never laughed as much. The boys wanted to know what we wanted to do next as the sun came down..I said fish as I still hadn’t caught my barra…so we kept going till midnight . I invited them back for drinks & nibbles & Herg asked if he could take me outside to show me the palm trees. He then asked permission to kiss me..how could a girl resist. I actually had fallen head over heels in love with him on the boat.
I went back to Sydney town but could not get him out of my mind. He flew down to visit & said he had fallen in love so I just said he had to sort out his lady in Melbourne . He booked to go down but before he went I took him Go-Kart racing & he did his back in. So he hobbled on the plane & broke up with the lady. My boss at the time said “you wouldn’t” my reply was that you never never know!!!!!! Herg flew down about six times that year & we spent an absolute fortune with telecom. About one year later I moved to Darwin , we became engaged & married 5 years to the day we met at a cattle station at Mount Bundy .
Bye the bye it took me two years to catch a barramundi!!!!!!!!!!!
