Happy ending to big film romance

Filed under:

ROMANCE on the big screen had a spin-off for a young couple working at the former Empire Cinema in the town centre.

Projectionist Joseph Martindale fell in love with usherette Patricia Fell after spotting her selling tickets and ice cream.

The moment he first clapped eyes on her he told a friend ‘I’m going to marry that woman’.

And his prediction came true – six months later Joseph popped the question and they were married at Sacred Heart Church in Milnrow Road 50 years ago.

The hard-working couple’s evenings at the cinema came on top of full-time day jobs. For 40 years Mr Martindale, now 78, was a railway worker while Mrs Martindale, 66, was a machinist at State Mill. She later worked as a Macmillan nurse, helping cancer patients.

"I had heard very good things about it," he says now. By the time he finished Le Carre's savage indictment of the international pharmaceutical industry -- particularly its use of poor, unsuspecting Africans as human guinea pigs for new drugs with dreadful side effects -- he was incredulous.
