A team of Government officials and representatives of 12 major travel agencies in Vietnam are making an eight-day survey of bordergates and tourist destinations along land routes connecting Viet Nam, Laos and Thailand.
The team, headed by Director of the Travel Department of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) and comprising officials from the Ministries of Public Security, Foreign Affairs, Transport and Communications, and the General Department of Customs, held a working session with the Lao National Tourism Agency. The two sides looked at the opening of new land tours through the Tay Trang bordergate (in northern mountainous Dien Bien province) to northern Laos, as well as from southern Lao bordergates to Viet Nam’s central highlands region.

PHUKET, May 6 (TNA) – The Chamber of Commerce in Thailand's southern resort province of Phuket today announced a raft of plans to revive the island’s struggling tourism industry, including international sporting and beauty contests.
Describing the island’s post-tsunami tourism situation as ‘appalling’, the chamber’s chairman, Mr. Iem Thawornwongwong, said that the chamber was helping local bids to restore visitor numbers.
Included in the chamber’s plans are support for international sporting competitions, and activities relating to the international Miss Universe contest later this month.
Other events include Miss Teen Thailand in October.

PHUKET, May 8, (TNA) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is teaming up with leading tour operators to attract Malaysian golf enthusiasts to the resort island of Phuket, where tourism has been flagging since the December tsunami.
Driven by the need to revive the island’s tourism fortunes, the TAT’s Kuala Lumpur office joined hands with Benoa Tourplan to lead a delegation of Malaysian golfers to take part in a Phuket-based tournament last week.
Known for its high purchasing power, the golfing market is a niche market which the TAT is particularly keen to attract, particularly as golfers generally bring their families
Hong Kong Financial Secretary Henry Tang will lead a delegation of government officials, tourism industry leaders and new attractions operators to Bangkok of Thailand and Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia to promote Hong Kong tourism.
The "Discover the Hong Kong Magic" campaign will start on Sunday, a government press release said on Friday.
"The opening of Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005 presents a unique opportunity for Hong Kong to reposition itself as a premier destination for family tourists," Tang said.
