Romance and politics a toxic blend for New Jersey politicians

Filed under:

Why do otherwise smart politicians go bonkers when they’re smitten in romance? Former Gov. Jim McGreevey couldn’t see that Golan Cipel as security adviser was a disaster. Sen. Jon Corzine missed the conflict in his actions, too.

Corzine gave a girlfriend $470,000 to buy a home from her ex-husband. The woman is Carla Katz, president of Local 1034 of the Communications Workers of America. The union Katz heads represents 9,000 state workers, and the next governor will have to sign off on a new contract, a contract your tax money will pay for.

Corzine’s investment company forgave the loan. Corzine says his romance with Katz ended. Corzine also said he paid the gift tax on the money.

Former Gov. Christie Whitman pointed out recent events have shown a governor’s private relationships can cloud judgment and compromise the state’s interests.

He says about 100,000 Chinese people visit Queensland each year. He's also hoping to foster better trade relations. Mr Wu told Mr Beattie he

Hollywood films sometimes reach Japan very slowly. Put the two phenomena together and you get the weirdly dated Jersey Girl. Starring Ben Affleck as the grieving husband of Jennifer Lopez, who dies during childbirth early in the film, this is essentially another tribute to how truly, madly, deeply Ben and Jen are

A gay romance, with snob appeal

Paul, the protagonist of the new gay romantic comedy "Joy," is a pretentious prat. He has a habit of ruining parties by drunkenly chastising everyone around him for their lack of militant homosexual fervor. Even his friends call him "abrasive and offensive." By the end of the show, however, he's ... well, actually, he's still a pretentious prat. Playwright John Fisher is making a melancholy point here, about a vulnerable man who hides behind unyielding politics to push people away. Paul raises important social issues, but they're hampering his ability to find companionship in the everyday world. (Just in case you're

My Chemical Romance is too big for New Jersey’s basements

The band performs at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Theater at Continental Arena, East Rutherford. Tickets are $19.99 and $25. Ray Toro and his band mates miss New Jersey. They miss the cramped New Brunswick basements where college students crammed to hear their band, My Chemical Romance, until there was barely space left to play. They miss packing Montclair's Bloomfield Avenue Café and Passaic Park's Loop Lounge with their friends. They miss rocking VFW halls. "It was a crazy, crazy time," Toro said by telephone, as his band prepared to get back in the bus and travel to another city. "There
