You can’t rush serious romance

Filed under:

Times and technology have changed since the days when our grandparents were dating. They called it “courting” back then. But what hasn’t changed is people. We are still made out of blood, flesh and bone – just as we’ve always been.

In this age of instant this, instant that, sound bites, split screens and time measured in nanoseconds, we are enamored with speed. We do everything quickly. We think fast and we move fast. We’d go even faster if we could.

When it comes to dating, moving quickly isn’t a good idea. In dating, speed is a liability, not an asset. The goal of a serious dating relationship is to get to know your partner well enough to know if you want to marry him or her. That doesn’t happen in nanoseconds. It takes time.

Sure, there’s “love at first sight” – something we all hope will happen for us, but rarely does. And when it does happen, an unwise couple rushes the getting-to-know-you process and the relationship falters.

A wise couple takes the time to get to know each other well before marrying. A good rule of thumb is to spend a full year getting to know someone before making the decision to marry.

Family holidays

Now is the best time to take small children on holiday. If you have toddlers and are not yet tied to school terms, it makes sense to travel before the big rush in July (avoiding the Whitsun half-term week). Not only will you have a better choice of holiday but it will also be cheaper, quieter and you'll avoid the searing heat of the peak summer months. Numerous operators cater for families with babies and toddlers and most start their childcare services (clubs, nurseries and babysitting) this month. Evacuees to marry after whirlwind romance

A new friend Jacqueline Gordon met at the New Orleans Convention Center told her God was going to send her a husband. That was four days after Hurricane Katrina filled Gordon's home to the roof with water and sent her packing, homeless and penniless. "I was looking for nobody," Gordon said at Camp Williams Sunday. "I had my mind on surviving." But maybe her friend, Yolanda Favorith, really was privy to God's plan. In fact, Gordon had already met her future husband. After traveling two days from her flooded home to

My Chemical Romance Wows in a Sold-Out Show

Jumping onstage dressed in black like a soldier, lead singer Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance was more than ready to battle the crowd. Pumping his fist in the air and grasping a microphone stand covered with red roses while crimson lights gleamed on his pasty complexion, Way widened his black eyelined eyes and looked down upon the crowd. He yelled at fans as thousands of bodies meshed and pushed in front of the stage, dying to get closer to their favorite emo-punk band while drummer Bob Bryar slammed on his kit, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero strummed with a

Romance, TV-Style

Time was when the winners of television game shows earned a roomful of furniture, a trip to Tahiti, or, if they were really lucky, a Brand New Car! Today, winners of some such shows earn a spouse. There also was a time when a date consisted of two people and a pizza place or movie theater. Now, dates can consist of 26 singles, a posh estate, and a plethora of TV cameras. Oh how times have changed! Reality television shows not only have altered our entertainment choices, but also our thoughts about romantic relationships. And while most of us are aware that
